 Mumia Abu-Jamal is doing twice weekly radio essays. Now you will only hear this here, or if we meet for coffee or dinner: Mumia has been studying music, composing it, reading and writing it. And he is amazing. He is writing songs that will knock your socks off; I almost fell off my chair listening to him singing. As it turns out he has a five-octave range. Of course, the big problem is that he is trapped in a concrete box, which makes it acoustically difficult to record his beautiful voice. But we are working on total freedom. And I am confident he will be singing among us. In the meantime, folks are transcending the prison walls and recording his written music—keeping Mumia alive, growing, learning and creating. When we meet for coffee or dinner I will play these songs for you.
