  • THE LEGACY: World's Greatest Jackson Tribute Mix!

    Current mood:optimistic

    I know what you're thinking, the last thing world needs right now is yet another Michael Jackson tribute mixtape?  Believe me, I'm pretty much of the same opinion and I didn't take the decision to do this lightly, but the flood of (in too many cases) pretty half baked tribute mixes, radio shows, podcasts over the past week kind of got under my skin.  It seemed almost as though people were putting more effort into being the first to get something out than they were into a making decent job of it.  I'm of the view that if you're going to mark somebody's life's work, the least you can do is pay some respect by putting some proper work into it.

    So that's what I did.  Just over a week after Michael's passing, I'm pleased to present what I've (humbly) called THE LEGACY: World's Greatest Jackson Tribute Mix! - 60 minutes, 45 tracks, featuring a selection of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5's original works, edits, acapellas and demos accompanied by records that have sampled them, cover versions, tributes and remixes from the likes of Dwele, Dilla, DJ Spinna and Ian Brown amongst others.  All that laced with original interviews and some heavy edits. It's been a labour of love, but I'm feeling like it was worth it.

  • THE DIARY Volume 1.5

    Current mood:animated

    I never really got into using this blog on a  regular basis because, well, it seems everybody has a real blog of some sort already.  Nonetheless, no harm in a bit of free advertising so I'm here to say that THE DIARY Volume 1,5 (20 Years of the Remix) will be hitting your screens, iPods, ears etc on 1st March 2009.  As always, more info at WWW.MUSICOFSUBSTANCE.COM website update permitting!
    For those in London, please also show some love by coming down to the launch party on Firday 6th March at Herbal, Kingsland Road, East London.  Hope to see you there...
  • The music on my Myspace page . . .

    As with me actually getting a myspace page, this post is probably a bit late seeing as the songs have been on my page for at least a month, but I thought I ought to finally write something about the songs on my page;

    The first and third tracks are remixes of a track called 'Keep On' by the Bone Idols featuring Ty and Aphletik that I did for London label Above the Clouds.  The original version was something of a summer classic in 2004 and these remixes were pencilled as the follow up B-side to another track Bone Idols were doing with J Live.  The J Live track never came out and so the remixes never got used .  It seemed a shame for them to go to waste so here they are on my page.  I bumped into Ty last weekend at Blacktronica and, being the nice guy that he is, he said he was happy for the tracks to be out there so when the full website goes up, they'll be available to download.  Watch this space.

    If you've seen my photos then you know that I have a soft spot for adidas shelltoes. It seemed like a good idea (an idea which turned into an obsession) to put together a little skit using all the references to them that I could find in my records. Once I'd finished it, I had a crack at selling it to Adidas but they were funny about sample clearance ... so here it is (track 2 that is).

    The fourth track is one of the skits from my part produced / part compilation LP 'Lyric Superbrand' which was released on UK label Different Drummer in 2001.  Some of the material sounds a little dated now but it was pretty true to the sound of the time.  The album received a lot of really good press worldwide, got radio play on BBC Radio 1 and received national airplay on other stations as far afield as Poland and Australia.
