On a warm night in March I went to the Dragonfly to check out a new band emerging from Los Angeles called D. Hollywood. I had no idea what to expect, but they were heavily recommended by a colleague who has never led me astray. And this was no exception. When D. Hollywood hit the stage I was instantly mesmerized. a wall of feedback exploded into "my name is love". A fat groove with a crunchy spy movie guitar riff. And very clever lyrics personifying "love" in an amusing on the brink of funny, yet smart manner with a darkness looming in the corner. Front man "Dirty" instantly grabs your attention, stylish and energetic, his charisma is deep and sincere with a lingering sense that he's a bit "off" in the brain. Dirty's charm and quirk perfectly personify D. Hollywood's music. Artsy yet comprehendible, radio friendly but unique. ..Dirty is joined by two more guitar players, Skinny Tubs and Michael Vincze. Together they make a huge tone smoothie with the perfect blend over a peach fuzz bass and heavy hitting beats by low end specialist Trip Dub and drummer Christian James-Hand. Song after song D. Hollywood continued to deliver. The heartfelt revelation in "on fire" has hints of Foo Fighters, while the brain melting craziness of "walking on a train" is more like the Gorillaz mashed with Counting Crows. When they closed the set with the west coast anthem "California" the crowd was hyped, screaming and inspired. D. Hollywood has a diverseness that is refreshing, overflowing with talent, they are a blinding light in enormous dull music scene in Los Angeles... I had the opportunity to sit down with D.
