Elie Afif

Bio:

Originally from Beirut, Elie Afif is one of the most sought after bass players in the Middle East region. At the ripe age of 25, he has performed at notable international festivals such as Java Jazz festival, WOMAD Festival, Palermo Jazz Festival, Dubai Jazz Festival, Abu Dhabi Jazz Festival, Mongo Jazz Festival in Brussels and Novar Festival in Bordeaux. Elie was first introduced to music by his older brother at the age of 9. Soon after, music became his main interest and he began studying from records which was the only source of learning tool available to him at the time. He began imitating bass lines from records, such as those of Jaco Pastorius, Weather Report and Joni Mitchell’s and immediately began showing talent. By the time he was 17 his name had become known around town. During the same year, Mike Stern invited him to perform with him during his visit in Beirut, which further inspired him to pursuit music as his profession. He then began playing regularly with Arthur Satyan and started taking lessons in upright bass as well as in classical contrabass, while taking a great interest in Barry Harris approach in jazz theory. In 2007 upon receiving scholarship, he attended Prins Claus Conservatorium in Holland for a short period ,Attended several Master Classes Of the Master Barry Harris . Elie has performed with many international artists including Rene Mclean, Bobby Durham, Dwight Dickerson, Bobby McFerrin, Mike Stern, Jerome Sabbagh, Chris McNaulty, Bob Frenceschini, Cristo Fontecilla, Kamal Musallam, Olivier Collette, Gino Latouka, Steve Uben, Raed El Khazen, Tarek Yamani, Khaled Yassin, Arthur Satyan and Rony Barrak. He is now based in Dubai, UAE and performs in deffrent formations mainly as Afif Brothers.
