Bio
As a drummer, Gil Oliveira is accustomed to the limelight in the Brazilian music scene. He has played professionally since a teenager, and to date takes credit performing in shows and/or television with heavy weights such as Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Ivete Sangalo, Moraes Moreira, Baby do Brasil, legendary guitarist Pepeu Gomes and partaking in the Brazilian Carnival in Salvador, Bahia for more than a decade. He also took part in a weekly TV show with Preta Gil that featured various artists such as Alcione ,Sandra de Sá, Angela Maria, Sidney Magal, Jerry Adriani, Gretchen, and Odair Jose. Born in Rio de Janeiro, into the Novos Baianos band and community, he is the son of one of the vocalists, Paulinho Boca de Cantor, thus, Gil was initiated into the world of professional playing at a very early age. He has appeared in various magazines including Modern Drummer where he was defined as a “drummer with an unbiased musical view, and always open to new concepts..” Artists that he has recorded with include “Brazilian wunderkind” Lucas Santtana and Seleção Natural. Their most recent album “3 Sessions in a Greenhouse” (2006) has been received with critical acclaim for it’s eclectic mix of dub, samba, and candomblé beats. He has also recorded 2 albums with Preta Gil, one “Pret-a-Porter, in which he has co –produced, Davi Moraes, SNZ, and has performed with rock band Catapulta (nominated for best new comer video clip by MTV Brazil) and his father, vocalist Paulinho Boca de Cantor. Gil is currently living in New York City, partaking in the Brazilian music scene in many of the most renowned clubs in the city .He is presently performing with Cyro Baptista + Beat the Donkey , playing in many important festivals in the US and Europe such as the Roccella Jazz Festival in Italy, FMM in Sines Portugal and Festival D`ETE in Montreal, Canada. As part of the Soleluna NYC lab project created by the italian icon Jovanotti, Gil has recorded the album/dvd OYEAH! and the soundtrack of the movie Bacciami Ancora and has toured in the USA and Canada in 2009/2010 playing in many legendary venues and at festivals including Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles , Stern Grove in San Francisco and Central Park Summerstage in New York . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... .... .. ..
