Nursery

one time I wished my self in love.
I was the little squirrel
with dark stripes.
I climbed shaky limbs for fruit for her.
I even swam with the moon on the water
to reach her.
that was a time little troubled me.
I worked all day to gather food
And watched her sleep all night.
It is not the same way now
but my heart still sings when I hear her
over the leaves.

While all this happened,
the morning aboard the
floating house had been
a most miserable one.
Moominmamma declined
to eat. She sat in the
rocking chair, repeating
over and over: “Poor
little children, my poor
dear little moomin child!
All alone in a tree!
He’ll never find his way
home again. Just think
when night comes and the
owls begin to screech!”
