A joint project launched in 2004 by Franck (ex-ROGOJINE and STEER VEGS) and Benoit Chartron (ex-ROGOJINE, PROJET CYCLO), GOLIAD initiates a migration from the noise-rock sphere of previous musical experiences toward a more experimental style, featuring compositions which are less brutal, more pared-down and richer in sounds. .. .. Guitar and drums form the skeleton of the project, and are most often the starting point of the rhythmic line. The addition of a saturated keyboard and prepared pedal loops (no performances or improvised manipulations on the loops, which serve as pedal-activated pre-recorded tapes) aims to complicate things by providing a rhythm section as well as mixtures of sound textures or linear strata which are often unwholesome, dissonant or disharmonic. Tracks are for the most part instrumental, but vocals occasionally break in, a raspy voice with dry delivery in the line of ROGOJINE or STEER VEGS, short texts based on fragments of experience and intimacy condensed into allegorical sayings or brief and minimal imagistic descriptions. .. .. Striving (but not too hard) to break free as much as possible from the limits and constraints (if there are any) of the duo, the group remains driven by a minimalist inspiration. A strong rhythmic foundation is often the fulcrum for tracks which privilege tension and structures which are sometimes straightforward, sometimes at right angles. With Goliad, long metronomic and repetitive intervals brush up against sudden and incisive rhythmic sequences. The guitar fills all roles with no preconceptions: an agent of rhythm, noise, melody, or even silence when necessary. Restrained or brash; loud, brutal and unstable or light and linear; omnipresent or discreet the sonic events (a guitar riff, a synthetic layer, a pre-recorded ambiance or a voice) surge forth if possible where they are not expected or in an unexpected manner. Shifting from the predictable to the unforeseen, from change to the status quo playing off the force of contrasts (sonic, rhythmic or structural) is as least as important within each track as it is between the tracks themselves. .. .. Some live performances in different formations with MOLECULES, PAK, BADGEWEARER, BARKMARKET, NOMEANSNO, ZENI GEVA, HELIOGABALE, BELLY BUTTON, PAPA M, USJME DOMA, STORMANDSTRESS, DEUS, ALAN VEGA... ..
