Griogair Labhruidh

Griogair who is currently 28 years old was brought up near the village of Gartocharn, Loch Lomond in region once steeped in Gaelic traditions known as the Leamhanachd. He was drawn towards his family traditions and history at a deep level mainly because of his strong family ties to the living Gaelic tradition of Ballachulish. His father’s family are one of the most well known musical families to emanate from that area, his direct patronymic sloinneadh (lineage) being Griogair ‘ic Ghòrdain ‘ic E’n ‘ic Sheumais ‘ic Uilleam ‘ic Thòmais ‘ic Uilleam. His main focus is the survival and revival of the traditions which his people had honed before Gaelic traditions suffered the effects of cultural colonization. With cultural ties to North Lorne, Sunart, Glassary and Trotternish, he is also a tradition bearer for; mainland Argyll in general, the Leamhanachd (Lennox) and has an interest in the traditions of North East Skye. Griogair is currently the only young person who sings, speaks and writes in the natural dialect of the Ballachulish area and has learned this from a living tradition to which he has a direct connection. Griogair is also the composer of many original Gaelic songs and pipe tunes. Most of these compositions are written in an old style which is quite uncommon to his generation. He has taken it upon himself to reassess and analyze the Gaelic singing tradition to which he belongs and discover why it is such an important part of national and international culture by writing a treatise under the auspices of Dr Lillis Ò Laoire, Galway University. He performs music professionally both solo and in collaboration with other musicians and has released two albums Dail-rìata (2007) and Guaillibh a’ Chéile (2010).

Reviews for Dail-riata

'The young musician to look out for in Gaelic and Highland music..plays guitar and pipes with considerable skill...sings with a strong expressive voice...a real air of authority...Dail-riata is a powerful contemporary statement that's enriched by history'.

THE HERALD

'The rising star of new Gaelic music... a powerful, confident and sensitive singer... plays guitar, Highland and smallpipes all to an exceptional level... Compulsory listening for anyone interested in Gaelic and Highland music'.

SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY

'Griogair Labhruidh is an exceptionally talented musician. He is telling us alot about the heritage of the Gaelic people and I really enjoyed the c.d'.

THE SCOTSMAN

'Songs full of feeling and sentiment for the Gaelic tradition, and he has the voice and delivery exactly right for putting them across…an altogether enjoyable and rewarding album and one to treasure'.

IRISH MUSIC MAGAZINE

'Griogair Labhruidh’s musicality is astonishing…Dail-riata is an exemplar among traditional albums; Griogair is clearly so at ease with the tradition into which he was born and able to explore it and express himself with superb confidence and immense maturity – and with a strong sense of pride.. Don’t miss this one – it’s an absolute gem'.
