  • Bio

Mo McMorrow is an Austin Texas based singer/songwriter, but she took the long way in getting there being an avid adventurer in both art and travel. Born and raised in Toronto she studied painting receiving a Masters from the University of N.S.W. in Sydney where she exhibited her art for many years. She worked in theatre as a lighting operator, and performer and started writing songs on the quiet. 1996 she moved to the art-soaked medieval town of Galway Ireland where she soon developed a character named Gino Morino (a Sicilian man in a black suit) She performed as Gino in theatres and stand-up comedy venues even sharing the stage once with Steve Earle in a Town Hall Theatre variety show. In 2000 she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Francis Hughes, one of the IRA hunger strikers who died in 1981. This inspired her to write a song "After the Rain" which gave her the surreal experience of singing it to the Hughes family in the family home in Northern Ireland. This was her first ever live singing performance. "If you've got a song in you the Irish will get it out of you" she says and by 2002 Mo had decided to pursue singing and songwriting above all else with occasional portraits to help pay the bills. In 2007 Mo moved to Austin Texas to record and recorded her first CD "Mona Lisas Don't Cry" at Shine Studios under the guide of Justin Douglas. Gurf Morlix, Ray Bonneville, Eliza Gilkyson, Cindy Cashdollar and Ireland's Sharon Shannon are included on some of the tracks. In 2011 she started making music videos taking to it naturally and finally putting all her creative interests into one art form. Another string was added to her bow when she teamed up with the fiddle player Richard Bowden who's resume reads like a who's who of Texas music and beyond. Names like Ryan Bingham, Terry Allen, The Maines Brothers Band and Butch Hancock are to name a few. He has toured extensively having played all over North America, Europe, India and Africa. There's no telling where these two adventurers will end up.

Keep sayin' it Mo. It's not falling on deaf ears, okay, maybe drunken monkey-heads, but not deaf ears!  Powerful.

Bio:

Mo McMorrow is a well-traveled whirlwind of creative energy. In song this energy translates to a nuanced brand of Irish-Americana led by a voice of honey and steel, braced by confident and surprising percussion and steeped in transatlantic themes of place and ancestry. Mo McMorrow’s new album Mona Lisas Don’t Cry draws from her connection to and her love for many places, and the good-byes that leaving brings. The result is a freshly sincere collection of songs whose lyrics embrace the sorrows of moving on. ................................................................ Mo grew up in Toronto but moved to Australia to study painting where she received her Masters degree. In 1996 she put down her paint brush and took a trip around the world. Her first stop was to be a week in Ireland, but she stayed… for 11 years! “If you’ve got a song in you, the Irish will get it out of you!” she says and in the quiet of a cottage in Kinvara she started writing songs. (One of her songs “Dancing on the Freeway” is included on the compilation CD Out of the West which includes John Prine, Sharon Shannon, Delores Keane, and The Saw Doctors to name a few). For years she sang in pubs and clubs up and down the west coast becoming a consummate performer. She joined forces with Mary Shannon, and together they created an eclectic and original mix of Americana and traditional tunes and songs that made people smile. Then, in 2007 she tore herself away from Ireland and headed for the Mecca for singer/songwriters, Austin Texas. Inspired by such a talent soaked environment McMorrow wrote new songs and disappeared into the darkness of Shine Studios. She has now emerged with her first offering .......................................................................................................
