..Reviews.. .... My Minds Weapon.. Paridian .. The Death Of Her Money .. Buried In Vegas .. Cafe Drummonds, Aberdeen.. 06/04/2009 .. .... 4/5 .... Aberdeen metal scene turns up in numbers for local bands set .... ..If one thing is for sure going into this gig, it's clear that Nitrogen Promotions know how to get the punters out on a Sunday evening... With local heroes My Minds Weapon leading this impressive line up of metal assault, this is probably the busiest you will see an Aberdeen venue on a Sunday for quite some time. .... After the cancellation of the awesome Fellsilent, I found it quite difficult to gather the enthusiasm to attend this gig. The opening band, local band Buried In Vegas kick things off with an above average set, featuring some hard hitting metal, delivered in quite tight packaging. However, about midway through the set, frontman Dan’s voice begins to fail him and this is a pity as the set begins to lose its visceral edge as a result of this. Buried In Vegas will feature a new vocalist as of Monday night, and this position may already be filled as another vocalist joins the band onstage to ram the last song of the set down your throat with the onstage presence morphing from ordinary to the extremity of a Dirty Sanchez stunt. On a final note, the bands bassist was filling in on guitar, and I wonder why as he delivers an almost flawless performance. I look forward to seeing how this bands set differs on the following Monday. 3/5 .... Up next is the utterly flawless The Death Of Her Money. Delivering some ambient rock music that drones on with a huge atmospheric presence, this is a band who sticks out like a sore thumb, and a good one at that. Hailing from Wales, this three piece are welcomed by ignorant stares from the small elitist bunch standing across from me but when you look at this set through the eyes of a neutral, this is a performance that no one was ever going to match this evening. The whole set flows seamlessly and the band from start to finish feel part of the music and this, adding the razor sharp precision and overall ambience of the performance, makes this the best set I've seen all year. Ending with a crushing crescendo that climaxes with Kaskie spewing his guitars feedback in your face, this band just know how to get the blood pumping. If you haven't checked this band out yet, do so now and do your ears a favour. 5/5 .... Paridian are up next as the crowd develops in size as the Glasgow quintet takes to the stage. The band know exactly what they are doing and what they want to sound like, and their live performance is a well oiled affair because of this. Battering through a set full of sharp metal riffage, Paridian exert a sound almost similar to Fellsilent's. Although not at the level of the aforementioned band, it still makes for a good listen and a clean cut performance makes you enjoy the music even though you may not do so on record. This is what separates the men from the boys, and Paridian deliver with enough conviction to prove they are the former. 4/5 .... Hours gone by, and tonight’s headliners take the stage to a barrel of double bass and guitar riffs of epic proportion. This is what metal Aberdeen quintet My Minds Weapon are all about. The band cover every inch of the stage and it is fantastically clear that guitarist Dan Goldsworthy loves playing to a crowd, spending the whole set in the faces of the front row whilst tearing out an awesome performance. Frontman Ben Timpson has an abundance of confidence and although directed in the wrong manner, he interacts with the crowd after every track. His onstage persona is invaluable, but the whole set he moans and complains about the crowds tame participation, and although he may be right, after the fourth song it begins to get annoying and takes away quite a bit of good feeling from this set. Powering through tracks from their debut album ‘The Carrion Sky’, MMW have a raw edge to their delivery and each song sounds great on stage, but the songs themselves are also well structured. As already mentioned, Dan takes this set by the scruff of the neck and hauls it through the barbed wire sharpness of his ripping guitar solos, and the sheer enjoyment on his face throughout is enviable. Finishing the set with a declaration that Ben won't be leaving the band in the near future, My Minds Weapon invite allstationsdown vocalist Alistair on to the stage for the fantastic closure 'Goodbye', and with things wrapped up nicely, you have the resounding feeling that My Minds Weapon are still conquerors of the Aberdeen metal scene, and the pack behind them still have a long way to go. 3.5/5 ......
