"Known as one of the city's best live bands, Failed Musician sees the light of day, finally, as their debut recorded offering, capturing the ethos and pathos of their pants-on-fire concerts. If you like jazz, punk, funk, rock, improv and nuts, then you'll love this record." 4/5 - Steve Guimond (Hour).. .. "My Favourite Things is brilliant actually, raindrops and roses and the fine sound of music. Mostly this is instrumental jazz noise - not too noisy, not too difficult, not too hardboiled, just frantic frenetic jazz-fried other rock... they’re not adverse to a touch of garage punk and a touch of bad attitude though – They F**ked Good Tonight has a touch of the GG Allin about it... It just may be an eclectic ride but it does all make sense and it does flow as one glorious genre-bending irreverent whole, give it a few plays and you’ll suddenly find you love all the Hidden Charms (the Willie Dixon Hidden Charms actually), they go to many place and sound like nothing but Nutsak, recommended." -Organ Magazine(UK).. .. "Canada doesn’t suck. One of the best albums of the year so far is Failed Musician by the Canada’s Nutsak... get this album right now! Nutsak is awesome. Great band name. Crazy jazz freakout guitar music with some good ole rock ballads mixed in. I can’t stop listening, it’s some of the most inventive music I’ve heard come out of the big tiring rock machine in a while... The perfect thing for a mad, run down mind: listening to something even crazier than you. That’s a good way to live, if you are running crazy, don’t listen to Elliott Smith or some pappy crap music to calm yourself down- listen to Ornette Coleman! Listen to the Minutemen! Listen to Beefheart! Dolphy! Coltrane Live in Seattle 1965! Half Japanese! Nutsak!" - Adam (ShortWaveRockin).. .. "The band's debut is an awesome, ridiculous, rambunctious romp through punk, jazz, rock'n'roll, klezmer, country, Balkan, blues, you name it. From opener Baby Drools Diamonds to the closing instrumental cover of My Favorite Things, this is an exuberant, adventurous, oddball album that will revive your faith in thinking outside the box." 4/5 -T'Cha Dunlevy (Montreal Gazette).. .. "...yes there's plenty of punk attitude and in places styling, however one listen to "Hidden Charms", "Innuendo Shminnuendo" or "Last Train To Nutsak" will leave you in no doubt that Nutsak are a band with a vision way beyond the three minute quick fix most punk bands knock out." -Steven Reid (Sea of Tranquility).. .. "Novel without succumbing to novelty, Nutsak are a refreshing blast of tasteful, free fun." - Vish Khanna (Exclaim).. .. "First of all the recording quality is super. You can hear all the clicks, squeaks and buzzes behind every note, which is a very good thing because these are gifts. Nutsak is a band of unique quality... There is a lot going on in this mix but once I took the ride one time, I couldn't get off the rocket... Their interpretation of the classic “My Favorite Things” was a perfect ending layered with such personality and unique flair as I now know only Nutsak can deliver. Pick up and listen to Failed Musician only if you are brave enough to open your ears without prejudice. I recommend bravery." - Bryon Turcotte (Just Press Play).. .. "What's the deal with "grown up punk rockers" then? Well, let's just say that by listening to their new album Failed Musician, on Signed by Force, you get a taste of what intelligent grown up punk rockers should sound like (...who's to say...). I mean, everything is still there, except that it has been dipped in free jazz, noise and Motown... Featuring crystal clear production by Jace Lacek at Breakglass studio, this album is (and you don't even know it) already on its way to your stereo." -Ralph (Midnight Poutine).. .. "Nutsak also blew me away, another Montreal band that I want to check out again, another unlikely mix of elements that makes the group impossible to lump into any particular category. Elements of skree and skronk noise rock, jazz influence, punk, a loungy number called "I Hate Everything". Great great great great. Another awesome live band." -Gordon B. Isnor (Pop Montréal 2007 review).. .. "Opening on “Baby Drools Diamonds,” a shakedown on Sesame Street, Failed Musician then coughs up some surly blues, dyslexic downers, cracked-out klezmer (“Cossak”) and numerous hair-raising spasm jams. Nutsak wail, flail and almost derail—but don’t fail. 8/10" -Rupert Bottenberg (Montreal Mirror).. .. "An album that sums the dynamics from Punk with Rockabilly, Blues, Jazz, Motown and Surf without falling into any of these particular influences and its preserving an uncompromised character that allows them to be humorous and fervently critic, misanthropic and amicable with style and dedication. Their technical ability on instrumentation is evident and the knowledge on the music they are able to deal with is evidence in the smart improvisation from their numbers, the album is exhilarated and fun without lacking seriousness or falling into chaotic unfolds, this is music that pretends to be entertaining but at the same time exposing many other divergent factors that may not be associated with its elaboration. This is Nutsak.... Failed musician is a trip into ideal disenchant but with a distinctive non comformist perspective, its a way to exploit what a musician is capable to do but at the same time is bored to hell to perform just to satisfy a simpleton public that just wants bland entertainment and knows a real shit about music in general. Here is your entertainment move your sorry ass with our music and experience the slap from our disenchant while you do. Good stuff!" - Jack the Ripper (Heathen Harvest).. .. "...this Montreal punk-rock super-group (comprised of veterans Sam Shalabi, Chris Burns, Howie Chackowicz and André Asselin) took 15 years to make an album that’s near brilliant, a jangly kaleidoscope of surf, jazz, punk and klezmer that pulls its punches erratically." - Chandler Levack - (Eye Weekly Toronto).. .. "Sounding kind of like a circus on acid, interbred with aliens, Nutsak is probably the kind of band where a live show would leave you sweaty and satisfied..." - Bryan Birtles (Vue Weekly - Edmonton).. .. - Ghoulie (dREUN.be).. .. (5/7) - WS (Mindview).. .. André Asselin (American Devices, Swamp Circuit, Sam Shalabi's Land of Kush) on bass and back-ups.. .. .Chris Burns (Ratchet Orchestra, Crackpot, Terminal Sunglasses) on guitar and vocals.. .. Howard Chackowicz (CBC radio's Wiretap, American Devices, Blowhard) on drums and vocals.. .. Sam Shalabi (Shalabi Effect, Detention, Egyptian Light Orchestra) on guitar and back-ups.. .. The album was recorded by Jace Lacek at Breakglass Studios in Montréal in the summer of 2007 and was mastered by Harris Newman at Grey Market. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI2khOhSWas
