accomplishedOrwell-Endeavors....Oh another band you haven’t heard of huh? So do you like metal at its sheer perfection? How about do you like guitar melodies that make you want to cry and kill children all at the same time? Well each member of this band puts out 120% of in your face, ball punching force into your speakers that may make your speakers cry. Seriously, this album is perfect, you can get it of ITunes as we speak, so get your ass on it already.....Key Tracks: “Firefighting in Hell, Dictators in Disguise”.... fan review by Brian!
******************************In a scene flooded with mediocrity and uninspired rehashes of past glories, few metal albums in the last few years have grabbed my attention the way local metal powerhouse Orwell’s new album, “Endeavors,” has. This album has been a long time coming. Since their first La Crosse show many years ago, I’ve watched Orwell go through various stylistic and line-up changes, with each performance or new song an improvement upon the last. Through all the years of trials that come with being in a metal band, the band’s integrity and determination have remained true, culminating in the release of “Endeavors.” While many influences can be heard, the band’s unique blend of thrash and melodic death metal manages to bring something fresh and exciting to the table. From the opening blasts of “Dictators in Disguise” to the epic closer “Firefighting in Hell,” this album never lets up in its intensity and is completely devoid of “filler.” Guitarists Tim Bradley and Erik Bolstad really shine on this album with a technical proficiency and fluidity to the songwriting that was sometimes missing in the Orwell of old. Vocalist Logan Hauser is a perfect fit for the band’s sound, delivering intelligent lyrics with a relentless intensity and impressive range. Drummer Jim Haugen and bassist Will Strickland provide a solid backbone to all the songs, and Haugen’s impressive drumming takes the music to a whole new level. Not to mention that the sound is excellent, effectively capturing the intensity of the band’s live shows. This is the sound of a band on fire and ready to prove themselves to the world. “Endeavors” establishes Orwell as a true force to be reckoned with, and I can’t wait to see where they’re headed. Buy this album; it is easily the best thing to ever come out of La Crosse’s metal scene. --------------fan review by Steve G.*********************Orwell is a serenading thrash band that takes no prisoners! They have many tools in their drawer and while holding a defining sound, manage to add unique elements that separate themselves from a "status quo" metal band of today.
In these days of massive lists of sub genres they manage to hold true to what metal was and should be. Rowdy, Fast, Interesting, and LOUD!
With huge guitar breaks, slamming drums, solid bass, and war cry vocals Orwell's Endeavors is definitely a pleasant listen for any metal fan.
GO OUT AND BUY IT!!!!! -------fan review by DRMChris on *sputnik music*********************Orwell the name to me bring up either a dead dystopian author or a bunch of dudes from La Crosse, WI known for making some noise. This is about the latter rather then the former. Orwell are true warriors of our local scene. They've toured, been through some line up changes and in this case have released a CD in a true DIY style. While this shouldn't matter too much the art and design are top notch really professional and rival even some big lable relases, sorry guys no one fucks with Maiden in my book. But the art and art direction were under the influence of the band and close friends as well as the photography. The recording was all local handled and the mixing done not so far away in the twin cities. ALL the elements are great and work as a great package. Like I said this wouldn't be a topic at all if it wasn't a shining example of how big lables don't always mean quality and people can do it for themselves in this day and age. So big fuckin kudos for that one to the guys and gals who worked on that.
On to the music. Once again if I played this for you sonically I would dare you to not tell me it wasn't a bigger lable with out knowing who this is. It just sounds great in the car, on the stereo, out out of the magical computer box nothing about this sounds 'local' in the bad connotation. This sounds like a band on a mission with polish. And yes this comes down to just the quailty of music as well. Let's start with the non-vocal elements. yeah let it be known I am a guitarist and multi instrumentalist so my ears go here first. I really couldn't find anything wrong and a whole lot of right with this. They work with in the extreme generes very well and know their stuff. And the execution of all parts is done very well. The guitars grind when they need to and soar when it's called for the solos are some great ear candy too, personal opinion some of them could have been longer but that's more of a compliment to me then a slam. The drums are just spot on and added great dynamics to already dynamic songs. I loved alot of the work on the kit and there was just some great sounds and how they were recorded. The bass work on this is at the top of it too. There is nothing left with out a pulse and post ...And Justice for all we in the metal trade like to down play the bass when it does count. Now on to the vocals. Knowing all these guys for a while I have heard them grow in the past few years and Logan has really come into his own. I was blown away by what he put on to disc. I am going to go out on a limb here and gush and say locally these guys are my favorite band instrumentally, vocally and song structure wise to beat in the terms of Exterme metal.
Now all of this is fine, and yes I did mention it, the songs are where it's at. I guess this is where I slightly will look like an ass, but, their songs do no wrong. They are fairly classicaly structured and really don't deviate. So there was no real sesne of danger to me. There is some acoustic work on it but I don't consider that out of the realm of metal Fade to black was in the 80's kids. BUT I will say it is all well done and great for mass consumption and who knows they might do something more progressive with further releases(unconfirmed wild speculation here). Like I said though the songs are great and if you can call something catchy in this genre there are some AWESOME riffs and song structures so in many ways it is a blue print perfect metal album.
I'm not gonna bother people with easy to digest stars sytesms I reccomend this highly. Go forth and buy it, heathens. URL: http://www.myspace.com/orwellwi (You can order the disc there or go to Def Ear in LaCrosse and select locations. go get yours) -
