BIG NEWS! Snowboy's 15th album 'Communication' is now out on Freestyle Records. The album features an original composition called 'Snowboy's Special' written especially for Snowboy by the King Of Latin Music - EDDIE PALMIERI! .. A BRIEF HISTORY......... .. SNOWBOY (real name Mark Cotgrove) is a Latin Percussionist and DJ. He has played professionally for AIRTO MOREIRA, MARK RONSON, FLACO JIMENEZ, BASIA, LISA STANSFIELD, JAMES TAYLOR QUARTET, INCOGNITO, JON LUCIEN and, of course, is a recording artist and band leader performing with his own Afro-Cuban Jazz group - SNOWBOY AND THE LATIN SECTION, a member of the all-star UK Funk group - THE SOUND STYLISTICS and also records under the pseudonym M.F.O.S. He has recently co-formed another all-star Funk Jazz band THE PERCEPTIONS (www.myspace.com/theperceptionsuk) and their debut album is released on October the 27th on Freestyle Records. .. He has played all over the world from Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai, Croatia, Japan and Singapore, from Turkey to Scandinavia to Ireland and the US and has already played many festivals this year, in Russia, and including sold-out shows at Londons two world-famous jazz clubs - Ronnie Scotts and The Jazz Cafe. Snowboy is also a producer, a re-mixer (check his re-mixes of LISA STANSFIELD, ROY HARGROVE, COLDCUT etc.) and has done countless recording sessions, notably with most from the 'Acid Jazz' scene - J.T.Q. INCOGNITO, MOTHER EARTH, NEGROCAN, CORDUROY etc, as well as LISA STANSFIELD, BASIA and FLACO JIMENEZ. .. Recently, in the Worlds market-leading Black Urban music magazine 'Blues And Soul', he was included as one of the 40 most important and influential British Black Music DJ's of the past 40 years! .. Altogether, Snowboy has had 20 singles and 15 albums released on various labels, and has just finished writing a music history book 'From Jazz Funk And Fusion To Acid Jazz - The History Of The UK Jazz Dance Scene', which will appear in late-February 2009 by the publishing house 'Straight No Chaser'. He is now also a staff writer for 'Blues And Soul' magazine (www.bluesandsoul.com) where he has his own column and reviews Jazz and Funk music. ............ .. He has recently been featured in the books SALSA-MUSICAL HEARTBEAT OF LATIN AMERICA by Sue Steward, DANCIN' SALSA - SALSA HOTLINE JAPAN, LAST NIGHT A DJ SAVED MY LIFE, JAZZ FOR DANCING and is in the WHO'S WHO OF LATIN MUSIC. .. He is without doubt, the country's best known Latin percussionist and his band is probably Europe's most travelled Latin Jazz act. He sees himself in the future as recording as many albums and playing live as much as he can to continue to spread his brand of furious, hardcore Afro Cuban Jazz around the furthest reaches of the planet, and as the unofficial ambassador for the U.K's Jazz Dance scene!! .. DAVID PATTMAN Bongos (U.K.) Dave is a specialist in Afro Cuban percussion and is highly knowledgeable in all aspects, particularly the music and rhythms of Santeria, and is an incredible Bata drum player. PAUL TAYLOR Trombone (U.K.) Paul's heavy duty solos play an integral part of the sound of The Latin Section and he leads the Horn Section. GARY PLUMLEY Saxophone (U.K.) A respected and world class saxophonist who leaves his peers in awe. He is also the saxophonist with Terry Callier. ANDY 'BLUFF COVE' JOHNSON Sound Engineer/Tour Manager (U.K) We consider 'Bluff' the 9th member of the band because he is absolutely integral to our live performances. SID GAULD Trumpet (U.K) Scottish born Sid is an in-demand session player who has done ridiculous amounts from West End shows (e.g. Miss Saigon) to Blur. He is currently with Incognito. DR NICO GOMEZ Bass (France) A class of his own, Nico plays with pinpoint precision and the ultimate groove. I fly him from Nice for every gig because he is unique. DAVIDE GIOVANNINI Drums/Timbales/Lead Vocals (Italy) Not only an outrageous drummer and Timbalero, this ambidextrous kit player is an incredible vocalist and possesses an amazing wealth of Afro Cuban folklore knowledge. He is currently the drummer with Steve Winwood. NEIL ANGILLEY Keyboards ( U.K.) What would I do without him? A phenomenal musician. I wrote the song DESCARGA ANGIXI in Neil's honour. He is Vanessa Mays MD, has just finished touring with Shirley Bassey and is on tour with Jeff Waynes 'War Of The Worlds' at the moment !!!
Influences
Musically, the main inluences are Tito Puente, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri , Mambo, Pello Afrokan, the Fania Records sound of the 70's, McCoy Tyner and Coltrane. In spirit, Snowboy's music is more influenced by the heavy U.K. Jazz dance scene rather than the Salsa one. As a Latin percussionist, he considers his style a cross between the innovations of Patato Valdez, El Nino [ Irakere's original Conguero ], Poncho Sanchez and his own concoction of a fusing of Tumbao, Mozambique, Rumba and Chachalokafun [ a Santeria Bata Rhythm].
