............ .. .. .. .. .. .. .... ..........Surphing Matylda started out in 1996 with Singer/Guitarist ARIAN coming back from a month long trip in Mexico. While on that trip he had no guitar and all he had was his notebook to write over 25 original songs. These were then filed through and picked or discarded once the music was written. Without a guitar on that trip ARIAN had no other outlet but the words pounding through his head to keep him straight..... Then ARIAN found MILES (who was only 16 at the time) to be his bassist. They started playing a bunch of free parties, rockin late at night with their early style which was almost metal based. They even played at a few friends weddings with surprisingly amazing response. Then they became one of the most popular groups in town with their pumpin stage presence and originality playing weekly gigs at various bars and pubs around Northern New Mexico..... Surphing Matylda started out as a hard core Reggae/Rock band but then later moved on to Funk, Latin and a little Ska in addition to the hard core Reggae/Rock. They recorded their first full length album in 1999 but it was just very good experience for the tightness of the group. ..Then in 2000 they hit a stroke of luck when ARIAN had run into a music producer while on a job site in Santa Fe, NM. Using the first album as a demo the producer took it to his studio for a listen and the next day Surphing Matylda was rewarded with a double album deal this was quite the accomplishment for any band much less any group from New Mexico. .... This next album "Afraid of the Dark" took the group over a year to complete. With the end results being very appealing for the New Mexico crowds at that time, Surphing Matylda was was to be marketed on radio stations and in turn getting higher paid bookings along with Nationwide distribution of the album. However all of this was too good to be true and the CD flopped as a result of the lack of marketing and a lack of commitment by the management..... 6 months after that they decided to call it quits when the Bassist quit and ARIAN decided to move to Hawaii. Every member knows that it was an excellent experience as well as valuable lessons for what to do in the future.
