The Carolina Chocolate Drops on Alternate Root TV
“Tradition is a guide, not a jailer. We play in a traditional style but we are modern musicians,” says Justin Robinson, one of the founding members of The Carolina Chocolate Drops. His quote sums up the mission statement of the group, three young and accomplished black musicians who have embraced their history and brought it, with fervor, to the forefront of American roots music. The band is composed of fiddler and singer Rhiannon Giddens, banjo player and singer Dom Flemons and singer, fiddler, banjo picker and various noises from auto harp to jug, Justin Robinson. Their 2010 release, Genuine Negro Jig (Nonesuch) rose to the top of the Americana Music Airplay Chart and cemented the bands place as one of the most exciting groups to arise from a format that has been hijacked by classic rock musicians on the downside of popular music careers.
The Re-Emergence of Saint Hayes
Seeing
Hayes
Carll
is
an
event
unto
itself.
Understated,
soft
spoken,
sharp
witted
and
shrouded
in a
quiet
brilliance
Hayes
delivers
a
constant
stream
of
body
blows
to
conventional
popular
music
with
a
distinct
voice.
Seeing
him
as
one
of
just
a
few
people
in a
photography
studio
in
Nashville
was,
as
expected, a
moving
experience.
Hayes
was
in Nashville
promoting
his
latest
release
Kmag
Yoyo
and
while
making
the
rounds
at
press
and
radio
stopped by
the
studio
to

an
acoustic
set
of
new
material
for
Alternate

We'll
be
featuring
songs throughout
the

here.
Paul Thorn Drops in on Alternate Root TV
There’s
an
art
form
to
Paul
Thorn’s
writing.
When
you
think
about
it
writing
in
the
style
of
Paul
Thorn
is
what
is
missing
from
today’s
brand
of
country
music
which
isn’t
really
‘country’
music
at
all.
Thorn’s
‘co-axial’
poetry
makes
you
think.
His
lyrics
let
you
think
about
things
that
you
like
to
think
about
and
challenge
you
to
think
about
them
differently
too.
He
delivers
meaningful
songs
about
the
everyday
human
condition
with
a
pleasant
yet
somewhat
gravelly
voice,
masterful
guitar
skills
and
an
everyman
perspective.
Spiced
with
the
frequent
use
of
double
entendre
that
has
always
separated
“true”
country
music
from
almost
all
other
style,
Thorn’s
music
represents
the
best
of
what

PREFIX = ST1 />....
Americana
....
music,
in
its
“truest”
form,
encompasses.
Peter Karp and Sue Foley on Alternate Root TV
The album ‘He Said, She Said’ is a new project from two long time working musicians, Peter Karp and Sue Foley. The songs are based around letter written and sent between the two over the course of a year. What started casually grew becoming more revealing, more personal. It was during the Americana Music Association Conference and festival in Nashville that Peter Karp and Sue Foley dropped by Hatcher and Fell Photography Studios where Alternate Root TV was filming for the second season. The formidable blues duo did an impromptu acoustic set and an extensive interview with show host Reb Landers which will air later in the season. We've decided to showcase a couple of the songs here along with an interview by Danny McCloskey about their latest project.
