  • THE END / THE ALBUM / FOGGY NOTION FANZINE

THE END. We played our last show on Monday 27th October. Thankyou to everyone who came to our shows or listened to our music and enjoyed it.

THE ALBUM. We spent Wedneday 12th November recording a 10-track album with Rory Atwell. We'll hopefully get the album mixed and get a track or two on myspace in a week or two and get the full thing available asap.

'Five' things Toby from Hatcham Social knows that you should also know and will now after reading this'

    ...Three.
The Fiction played their last show. They have a certain charm. Shame that we will not see them again. They are doing some final recordings though which is a good thing. Go and listen... . but the new stuff is the best and you should keep a watch to hear them when they are done.

I noticed recently that a friend of mine listed in his 'interests' on MySpace:

"finding great bands on MySpace that still have songs up for free download"

I was amused by this statement, but thought it a bit silly to list as an 'interest'.  A few days later I came across the MySpace of a young band from East London called The Fiction, and when I noticed with shock and delight that I was allowed to download and iPod their catchy tunes unencumbered, I had to admit my friend had a point.

The Fiction, who have previously opened for similarly-styled Hatcham Social at Neil's Children's club night, The Only Fun In Town, differentiate themselves from their East London neighbors by emphasizing clever songwriting and intricate basslines, with a look that is distinctly reminiscent of Orange Juice's angular good looks and tight jackets.   There are hints of Josef K mixed with Larrikin Love, and even Ray Davies in their hummable sunny day songs which impossibly aren't lacking in substance.  With their sharp-as-their-winklepickers guitar and blissfully beautiful dub-esque bass, it's a pretty good bet this band is headed up very fast indeed.

Thus, I would make it my first suggestion as an April77 Ambassador, that anyone reading this rush on over to The Fiction's MySpace immediately and get these tracks on your iPod before someone else realises how good they are and suggests they ought to be making you pay an arm and a leg for a 7" orange vinyl instead.

  • BUXTON ROAD DEMOS REVIEW IN STOOL PIGEON

There's nothing to dislike about THE FICTION, in the same way you could never hate your little brother's band. On the plus side the singer sounds unnervingly like a young Robert Smith without trying, and the songs themselves are alright, though the execution is a little clumsy in places, and the sound on the whole thin, with too much space. If they concerned themselves less with trying to sound like Wire and relaxed into it more they might just be dangerous. Apparently they're influenced lyrically by Jane Austen and Kafka, so I can't wait to hear the one about the runty, plain cousin in rapture about her forthcoming conjugal felicity with the handsome Mr Darcy, only to wake up on her wedding day to find she's turned into a beetle.
