Farmers Market, Aug 22
Current mood:
The Turk Island Jazz Band (http://myspace.com/turkislandjazzband) played our second engagement at the Hayward Farmer's market on Saturday August 22. This performance was alittle different from our last engagement back in May. Aside from a slight change in our instrumentation, both the venue and the vibe was a little different.
happy
Our regular reed player, Lyle Gillison, was out of town, and we would like to thank Hudi Brenman of the Emperor Norton's Jazz Band (http://myspace.com/emperornortonsjazzband) to fill in for this performance. Hudi is a fine player and he did an outstanding job. Our regular banjoist Jim Harget also was unable to make the performance and we want to thank Emperor Norton's banjo/leader Will Pratt for stepping in and doing a superb job of helping bassist Leslie Thorne and washboardist Marj Scooros hold down the rhythm section. Trumpeter Ken Newell did his customary excellent job and we managed to convince him to show off his vocal pipes with a fine rendidtion of the old standard 'Peoria'.
This time, we lacked a covering from the sun, but to compensate, we were positioned in the center of the market, where both the foot traffic and the visibility were much higher than our previous position on the plaza at the corner of 2nd Street and Watkins. We attracted a fairly large audience and we were pleased that our audience appeared to be enjoying the music. We had a few people actually dancing and the audience in general was enthusiastic and very supportive.
We were also fortunate once again to have some of the band's friends make an appearance. Bassist Charlie Mabie of the East bay Stompers and various other groups stopped by and consented to vocalize for us and trumpeter Tom Salvatore of the Emperor Norton's Jazz Band also stopped by and sat in with us for a set. We would like to thank both Tom and Charlie - they really added to the fun we all had. We also saw pianist Mark Jurich of the Barrelhouse Jazz Band (http://www.pg100.com/BHJB/), who was shopping at the market. Next time, maybe we'll bring a piano if we can convince Mark to sit in with us!
The market is run by the Marin Farmers Markets organization (http://www.marinfarmersmarkets.org) and we want to give them a hearty thank you for thie excellent work in organizing and helping us make a success of our appearance. Market manager Brad Burger was as usual friendly and helpful in all respects.
The performance went well and we look forward to our next appearance at the market. In the meantime, we would urge our followers to link to this page as we will be announcing our next gigs here. Thank you to everyone who came out and we look forward to seeing you all next time!
