  • David Franks: Walkabout…

    After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

    Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
    (please see my blog):
    TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

    Where traditions are not so rare;
        Sea, country and works scent the air;
    A multitude of monuments,
        Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

    The longish pedestrian malls;
        The remnants of defensive walls;
    Historic buildings are a gauge
        Of the respect for heritage.

    Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
        Estuaries guarded by shields;
    Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
        Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

    Rivers in parts licked by trees,
        Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
    And crossed by practical delights -
        Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

    Fine churches headed at Durham;
        Football kits ad infinitum;
    Kept castles - one for study;
        Masonry behind masonry.

    And, with moulding-works out that way,
    It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

    Dear Julian & Paul !

    Shame I haven't yet had the time
    To let you know what, to us, matters :
    Here's who we are, in a few words,
    Or should I say, in a few letters ...

    "Le Slamophone is a tribute
    To this one lesson we've been missing
    To these slam poets who remind us
    To get along, we need to listen ..."

About me:

*** Click Here Write Out Loud Click Here***

Write Out Loud encourages everyone who writes poetry to share their words with others in friendly, welcoming open-floor read-around and open-mic events.

We also support individual poets, and organizations and groups across the country, via our website.

Sharing poetry with others gives us more of a buzz than being published. We are not knocking publication; just saying that performance poetry offers different opportunities for poets. It's live, acoustic and encourages people to talk and listen to each other: face-to-face! With so many styles, ideas, forms, voices, experiences - we love it!

Our approach seems to have captured imaginations and enthusiasm!

Write Out Loud is run primarily by Julian Jordon and Paul Blackburn with Gemma O'Neill, John Armstrong, Louise Coulson, Sean Kavanagh & Val Cook supported by a growing number of volunteers. We currently run four regular monthly nights in the North of England at Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale and Wigan and have plans to run more. We hold many irregular and one off events too including an annual festival in Bordeaux

Visit our website at Write Out Loud to sign up or to find out what's going on in the performance poetry scene in the UK.

The site receives 15,000+ visitors a month - why not join them!

Who I'd like to meet:
