Most Recent Obsessions--------------------------The Figgs, Follow Jean Through the Sea: The Figgs are a Philly/New York based rock trio that has a long history of playing and a slew of great records. This one from 2006 is rock writing at it's best. The playing is effortless and at the same time incredibly tight, a sound achieved only by bands that have played together for long periods of time. The songs have humor, feverish intensity, and hooks that would make Elvis Costello swoon. Pick this one up, then go see them live. It's like Rock Band 101.------------------------------- Nick Lowe, Jesus of Cool: Imagine everything that you love about music and combine it into one record. That's the only way that I can describe Jesus of Cool. Everything sounds familiar, while still retaining complete originality. The song "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" is the shit in such a big way.-------------------------------Bob Marley and the Wailers, Survival: Later Bob Marley records are often overlooked, perhaps for the sheer genius of so much of his earlier work. It seems that by "survival", which was released in 1979, he had become comfortable with his place in the world. The music is relaxed, informed, and he is in complete control. Key Tracks: " so much trouble in the world" and "one drop"-----------------------Gospel Music (compilation): This collection of early Gospel Music was put together by the legendary record producer Joel Dorn. Every song is incredible. The music here is profoundly moving. Life changing.-------------------------Sweeny Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: There are a few great recordings of this fantastic show. Lately I've been into the Motion Picture soundtrack. The Carnegie hall version is also particularly impressive. Stephen Sondheim. Nuff' Said.----------------------------------The Grateful Dead, Blues for Allah: I've been diggin' on this one for a while now. It has such a warm sound and some of the most inventive writing they ever did. Check out "Crazy Fingers" and the epic " Help on the way-> Slipknot-> Franklin's Tower"---------------------The Lowlands, Bark and Twine: Definetely one of my favorite local bands here in Philly. Propelled by the stellar writing of Chris Kasper and Adrien Reju, "Bark and Twine" is the Lowlands at their best. The beautiful song "to the other side" has a very special place in my heart.
